OUR OCULAR HEALTH

For the vast majority of individuals, vision is one of the most crucial senses. The eye is a highly intricate organ, essential for perceiving everything happening in our surroundings. It houses millions of photosensitive cells and specific structures, such as the retina and macula (central area of the retina), which, through biochemical processes, transmit nerve impulses to the brain for analysis and translation into the detailed images we perceive. The complexity of the structures involved in the ocular system underscores the importance of maintaining its proper function.

Specifically at the macula and retina levels, there are high concentrations of organic pigments known as carotenoids, serving as light filters to safeguard ocular tissues from oxidative damage caused by sunlight or artificial lighting. One of these pigments is lutein, often referred to as the 'eye vitamin' (though, in fact, it is not a vitamin but rather a phytonutrient). Like other carotenoids, the body does not produce lutein, but it can be obtained through a balanced diet rich in vegetables such as kale and spinach (preferably cooked), broccoli, arugula, legumes like peas, corn, pumpkin, grape, and kiwi, as well as other foods like egg yolk.

With the aging process, there is a natural inclination towards a decrease in lutein levels in ocular tissues. Consequently, it is recommended to incorporate lutein-rich foods into one's diet throughout life and to consider supplementation, particularly in advanced age or instances of insufficient consumption or deficiency of this carotenoid in the organism

Several studies propose an association between increased lutein intake and a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This disease causes a loss of central vision and is the most common cause of visual impairment in individuals aged 55 and above. According to these studies, it is believed that, as an antioxidant, lutein not only protects against oxidative damage induced by light but also appears to demonstrate an ability to inhibit reactive oxygen species, seemingly slowing the progression of the disease.

Hence, lutein is a constituent to be incorporated into the diet and/or supplementation, alongside other vitamins, such as A, C, and E, which also play a role in enhancing vision quality and promoting ocular health.
