IMMUNITY

Immunity is the body's ability to maintain its integrity by recognising and eliminating the foreign bodies it comes into contact with. The body's natural protection from pathogens is due to two complementary types of immunity:

  • I - Innate or natural immune system - immunity the individual is born with and which does not need exposure to the infectious agent to develop. Babies’ defences are reinforced during the first months of life by the antibodies they receive from their mother's milk, which is particularly important while the infants own defences are under-developed.
  • II - Adaptive or acquired immune system - immunity the organism develops when it comes into contact with pathogens.
